Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are Scenic and/or Heritage Byway Programs? These are programs developed by the State of Florida to preserve, maintain, protect and enhance outstanding cultural, historical, archaeological, recreational, natural and scenic resources. The program focuses on community-based support to protect resources while supporting growth and tourism.

What is a Corridor Advocacy Group? It's a group of citizens, your friends and neighbors, who have organized to gain recognition for our historic and scenic byways by the Florida Heritage Highway Program. A formal application for designation must be made to the Florida Department of Transportation. The CAG(Corridor Advisory Group) collects and organizes information required for the application to become a Heritage Byway.

What are the benefits of becoming a Heritage Byway? Through community-based consensus and partnerships, the program will promote resource protection while encouraging appropriate economic development. Programs will be created to educate residents and visitors about the history and resources of the Corridor. Safety is a major consideration, for commercial and tourist travelers, as well as local residents. Designated corridors are eligible for state and federal grants to achieve the goals developed in the Corridor Management Plan. The application process encourages the community to consider growth and address issues associated with it.

What roads will make up the River of Lakes Heritage Corridor? The final limits of the Corridor will be determined as a result of the extensive application process. Cultural, historical, archaeological, recreational, natural and scenic resources will be inventoried and catalogued. The proposed Heritage Corridor starts at the Volusia/Putnam County line and extends south to the Volusia/Seminole County line utilizing US 17-17/92 as its main thoroughfare and will cover many ancillary state and county roadways.

What regulations will be imposed as a result of the Heritage Byway designation? The CAG has no regulatory power. It can only make recommendations about future improvements within the Corridor and work with residents to achieve them. However, once a corridor is designated, DOT will not issue new permits for billboards within its jurisdictional right-of-way.

How can I participate in the designation process? Attend the monthly meetings and share your ideas. Join the CAG and work along with your neighbors to collect the information to complete the application phase. Partner with the CAG by participating in workshops and supporting programs. Be an active member of your community!
